SECTiON X: ADDITiONAL GUIDANCE
The equipment covered by the 1130 Standard is subject to haiards that cannot be abated by mechanical means, but on1y by the exercise of intelligence, care, and common sense. It is therefore essential to have personnel involved in the use and operation of equipment who are contpetent, careful, physically and mentally qualified, and trained in the proper operation of the equipment and the handling of loads. Serious hazards include. but are not limited to. improper or inadequate maintenance. overloading, dropping or slipping of the load. obstructing the free passage of the load, and using equipment for a purpose for which it was not intended or designed.
The 830 Standards Committee fully reali,es the importance of proper design factors, minimum or maximum dimensions, and other limiting criteria of wire rope or chain and their fastenings, sheaves, sprockets.
length or unequal load application.
exposed: applies to hazardous objects not guarded or isolated, and capable of being contacted inadvertently.
gantry frame: a structural assembly that supports the trolley girder beams.
gantry kg: the structural member that supports a trolley girder.
gantry trazcl: the crane movement in a direction parallel to the crane runway
headHock: an assembly of sheaves, pins, and frame suspended from the crane for connecting container-handling devices such as lift beams and spreaders.
hoist: a machinery unit that is used for Jilting or lowering a freely suspended load.
hoist, main: the primary hoist mechanism provided for lifting and lowering the rated load.
lifting apparatus: spreaders, cargo beams, heavy lift beams, cargo hooks, and other devices attached to the headhlock for lifting loads.
limit device (crane motion): a device that, when actuated, limits crane motion.
load: the total superimposed weight on the spreader or hook.
iormal operating conditions: conditions under which a crane is performing ftinctions within the scope of the original design.
parts of line: the number of ropes supporting the load.
qualified person: a person who, by possession of a recognized degree in an applicable field or a certificate of professional standing, or who by extensive knowledge, training, and experience, has successfully demonstrated the ability to solve or resolve problems relating to the subject matter and work.
rail szt’rep: a device attached to the crane and located in front of the crane’s leading wheels to remove obstructions.
rated load: the maximum allowable working load designated by the manufacturer for which a crane or individual hoist is designed and built. The term “safe working load” is commonly used to describe the rated load.
reeving: a system in which a rope travels around drums and/or sheaves.
rope: refers to wire rope unless otherwise specified. runway, gantry: the path on which the gantry travels.
sereice platform: a means provided for workers to perform maintenance, inspection, adjustment, or repair of cranes.
